According to the latest statistics collected by DWRH.net, the combination of EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) + EoC (Ethernet over Coax) has become one of the widely recognized mainstream applications in China's cable TV network two-way transformation. but the market has three major kinds of EoC technologies and which EoC devices should be adopted, which is obviously important for Chinese cable TV network operators in their cable TV network two-way transformation initiatives. We recommend that when evaluating EoC technologies, operators should consider choosing the technology that was originally designed for coax.Not all technologies work over all mediums equally well.

For instance, HomePlug claims to work over coax but it was originally designed for use over powerline. It is not native to the medium. Working well on one medium (powerline) does not guarantee it will work over another medium like coax. MoCA was originally designed to work over coax.

We also strongly recommend that the decision-maker ask for independently verified field tests to prove performance claims. MoCA conducted tests in 2005 for MoCA 1.0 and found that the technology can deliver 110 Mbps of guaranteed bandwidth throughout the home. Many other standards alliances claim to have conducted field tests, but they should be confident enough to provide the information publicly. If they will not provide the information publicly, be very cautious.

The advantage of backward interoperability means operators can plan their technology roadmap for the next several years. They can have confidence that the equipment they buy today will work with the equipment they buy tomorrow. They cannot buy new equipment every time they want to upgrade the network. It is too costly.

It is not uncommon for some standards bodies to use the two terms interchangeably in an effort to confuse and mislead their audience. If representatives of a standards consortium claims their technology is backward compatible, ask them if they mean interoperable. If they say yes, ask them to prove it. If they can’t prove it, keep shopping.

Also, ask the technology rep of any standard body for proof of their performance claims. If they will not show you proof that is validated by an independent third party test facility, keep shopping.
